Sourav Mahanta  (Dr. Sourave Jyoti Mahanta) son of Sri Gopal Chandra Mahanta and Smt. Dulari Mahanta was born in Guwahati, Assam. Sourav graduated in Education Hon’s and ranked first class in Post-Graduation in Mass Communication and Completed Ph.D. from the Dept. of Communication & Journalism, Gauhati University. He acquired Five years Visharad degree in Indian Classical Vocal, Tabla Instrument and Assamese Traditional Khol Instrument. For other traditional folk and Sattriya music of Assam Sourav went to Sangeet Chiromoni Guru late. Ananda Mohan Bhagawati (former Director of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Assam, Hony Director, Institute of Assamese Dance) and Sangeet Bhushan Guru Kesavananda Deva Goswami (Recipient of Sankar Dev Award, Sahitya Academy, former Prof & head deptt of Assamese, Dibrugarh University). Apart from Hindustani and Assamese folk music he learned also Western Classical theory and Playing Guitar/ Piano at Shillong School of Music, Meghalaya, under Trinity Guide Hall & Rock School of Music, London. Further, for few days he went to Guru Alok Chatterjee, HOD Vocals Ravindra Bharati University, Kolkata for Hindustani Classical Taalim. Sourav broadcasts Assamese Modern Songs regularly being a B’high Graded artist of A.I.R (All India Radio) since 2010.


Since 1998 he is doing at his best rendering both vocals and music for several short films, documentary films, Feature films, Television Serials, Jingles and many audio albums. Nodi Mathu Boi (Song of the River) a film directed by Jhulan Krishna Mahanta, depicting a cultural expedition from the World's smallest river island Umananda to the Biggest Majuli, 'Sonar Boron Pakhi the golden wing' A biopic on the folk queen of Assam Late Pratima Pandey directed by Dr.Bobby Sarma Baruah, ‘Handuk, the hidden corner’ another true Story based Moran-Assamese Regional feature film by Jaicheng Jai Dahutia, ‘Kor Pora Koloi’, a fiction film directed by Deepjyoti Kakati, ‘Porichoi’ directed by Rajiv Borthakur and ‘Khyanachar’ by Sourav Baishya are a few notable films in his credit as music director. He received two Best Music Director Awards awarded by the Assam State Government at 7th Assam State Film Award and Film Festival, 2015 and 1st Sailadhar Baruah Film Award, 2016 for the film ‘Nodi Mathu Boi’. He has received Best Background Score Award in TTFG (Twilight Transition FI Gem) International Film Festival recently in 2022. Also he has been nominated for Best Singer award for two times in the Prag Cine Award, 2015 and 7th Assam State Film Award, 2018. Best Music Director nominations in Prag Cine Award 2019 and 2022 as well. He won the Best Music Director Award in Rengoni Music Award, 2022. He has also been awarded the Nipon Goswami Recognition Award, 2022 for his musical contribution in the field of music as Music Director. He worked in more than 55 Short films & Documentary films, 21 Feature Films & Telefilms, 13 Television Series, 15 Music Albums, more than 15 Radio Plays & Drama, 1 OTT Web Series and more than 250 independent song music till 2021. He also rendered music for several stage plays and travelled with music throughout the country and abroad as well. He has been rendering his voice and music for various prestigious events nationally and internationally organized at various places within & outside the country by Sangeet Natak Academy, SAARC- Colombo, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra, All India Radio, Guwahati, IGNCA-New Delhi, EZCC and many more. Presently he is working as a guest music faculty in Dr.Bhupen Hazarika Regional Govt. Film and Television Institute (Jyoti Chitraban) and Music Faculty at Maharshi Vidyamandir, Guwahati and Expert Member in the Panel CCRT (Centre for Cultural Resources & Training)

HIS INTEREST…."i like to travel, i like to have the different foods of different taste, i do like all the positive thinkers. Generally i eat music, drink music and sleep music .Every folk songs in the world basically i love the tone of the Irish and Chinese folk instruments like Bouzouki, Banjo, Uileann pipes, fiddle, Hulusi,  Bowau, Wot etc. Playing mouth organ and blow organs like melodica/Pianica is my favorite time pass and Harmonica was my first instrument...i do believe that music is a life long learning process and an endless journey.."
